We ran a competition 'Are You Ready to Submit', where Cornerstones authors were asked to send us the first five pages and synopsis. We wanted to see if we could find some sparkling talent based on the all-important opening pages. Out of 1000 submissions we picked 13 and one of these was Frances Kay.
As soon as I read Micka the voice was so clear and strong that I was hooked. My concern was that the subject matter was so hard-hitting that I wondered if anyone would be brave enough to take it on. Annette Green of the Annette Green literary agency jumped to represent her and Picador went on to publish it (due July 2010).
